Comparison of a Play within a Play in Hamlet Essay

Even though they are performing the same scene, the two movies are very different in style. First, the shots and lighting are displayed differently to catch the different moods of the movies. In the first movie, the camera stays close to everybodys face. It seems to zoom in on characters that are speaking and does not try to capture the listeners reactions to those who are speaking. Also, the lighting is very dark and the scene is closed in. The background scenery of a castle room is very small and closed in. This makes the room not actually seem like a real castle room because castle rooms are always shown as big, lavish, well-kept rooms. In the second movie, the camera, instead of being on one persons face, usually stays on two†¦show more content†¦Also, when talking to Polonius, Hamlet tries to hide the fact that he is making fun of him, instead of openly insulting him. In this movie, Hamlet is shown to try and flirt with Ophelia, who just acts disgusted with his words. She seems to be trying to play hard to get with him, which does not go with her supposed belief that he is crazy. Hamlet also throws in lines throughout this scene of the go thee to a nunnery speech whenever Ophelia throws a comeback that is too harsh for him. In the actual play, the two directors did not think alike at all. First of all, the second movie totally left out the dumb play. This seems more realistic to what the king does because the king leaves during the death of Gonzolago in the speaking play of both movies, but if the king saw what was going to happen by watching the silent play, then I think he would have gotten nervous as well as guilty right then and would have left the room. Also, the lines that Hamlet says during the middle of the speaking play are yelled out loud in the first movie, going along with the thought that he is crazy. In the second movie, he whispered them to either Ophelia, or the king and queen. Hamlet seems more focused on making the king feel guilty about murdering King Hamlet and showing it on his face to prove the ghost right in the second movie.
